As a Director in Dixon Hughes Goodman’s State and Local Tax practice, Tony Buffkin leads the sales and use tax practice for DHG. He has more than 30 years of multi-state consulting and tax experience and works closely with many of DHG’s largest clients providing consulting and guidance including audit defense and controversy, streamlining compliance processes and providing strategic tax planning.
Tony has extensive experience with Tax Technology, Sales Tax Compliance, Nexus Reviews & Voluntary Disclosure, Refund Analysis and Recovery, Audit Preparation and Defense, Tax Planning, Taxability Studies, Process Analysis and Improvement, and Voluntary Disclosure Agreement Negotiation.
Tony served with the North Carolina Department of Revenue for more than 12 years in various audit and management positions, including Director of Office Services. As a division director he was responsible for the department’s taxpayer assistance section, bankruptcy and central collections groups, voice response systems and electronic filing programs. As an auditor, he specialized in sales and use tax audits of industries including manufacturers, retailers, construction firms, technology firms and service industries. Tony led the effort to develop the Department’s Computer-Assisted Audit program.
Prior to joining Dixon Hughes Goodman, Tony worked with a Big 4 accounting firm as the National Technical Leader and Southeast practice leader for their Sales Tax Systems Practice, playing a key role in developing that firm’s national practice. Tony was one of the first professionals in the country to earn the designation as a Vertex Certified Professional. He also has earned the CMI –Sales Tax designation from the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), recognized as a mark of achievement and distinction in the sales and use tax field. He serves on the IPT’s CMI Certification Committee for Sales Tax.
